How far do you have to go before you can out run fate? That’s a question Dave, a horror writer, would no doubt love the answer to as he finds himself on the run from an undead mob boss and a demon that wants to take over Earth.
Ever since I finished reading Who the Fuck is Rocky Phantasmic?!, I’ve been thinking about how this review would go. I didn’t want to post spoilers, because the plot is just so much fun that it should be experienced without anyone telling you what’s coming. So what’s left?
This story is a mutli-POV horror that’s tempered extremely well with comedy. I can think of two instances in which the description made me gag but then a character would make a quip and I’d laugh. That vibe was the perfect choice for this story.
Honestly, if the story had been straight-up horror, I don’t think I’d have lasted. It would have been excellent, but as someone whose interests are horror adjacent, the gore would have been too much for me.
Every single character in this story is flawed. I love a good flawed character. I even love when I get to hate certain characters, but no matter their flaws, I didn’t didn’t hate a single one.
Quite possibly because the cast is unique. Where else would you find a writer with a polyamorous wife, a superhero, a disgraced comedian, a demon, an undead mob boss (and the people who work for him who are happy to get their hands dirty), a supervillain, and a priest? Exactly.
I found myself riveted to see what they would have to go through next. And let me tell you, they all have to go through a lot, even the ones you aren’t entirely sure you like, and somehow you end up feeling almost bad for them.
So, if you want to go on the run with a horror writer who’s trying to outwit destiny, you should read this book. I’m glad I did!
